An important and often overlooked aspect of pet health is dental care. Regular teeth brushing, dental chews, and dental care prescription foods are wonderful ways to keep your dog or cat’s teeth healthy. However, in addition to these things, dental exams and teeth cleanings are necessary to prevent pain and disease in your pets.
Signs your pet may be due for a dental exam/cleaning:
- Bad breath
- Broken or loose teeth
- Tooth discoloration/tartar buildup
- Bleeding/swelling/pain in mouth
- Abnormal or excessive drooling
- Your pet is over 4 years old and
- has not had a dental cleaning before
Bacteria in plaque can enter the bloodstream and spread to the heart, kidneys, and liver, causing damage and possibly even organ failure. Dental cleanings under anesthesia are the most effective way to prevent this from happening and keep your pet healthy.
